Worcester Dentist Given Patent for New Miracle Paste

Feb 2, 2012

A dentist in Worcester claims to have created a paste that will prevent teeth from falling out. He’s recently received a patent for this miracle paste.

Ray Steggles, from Wharfe Dental Practice in Lowesmoor Wharf, has been granted a UK patent for his product, called QSIant, which claims to treat bacterial diseases and prevents the teeth from coming loose. Mr Steggles developed the product while doing an Open University course in 2004.

The orange paste contains antibiotics and a substance that increases the efficacy of the antibiotic and is placed directly on the area of the mouth with the lowest bone density. It was first used in 2007 on a patient with severe periodontal disease, whose affected tooth was thought to be unsalvageable, but the paste was successful in treating the bacterial infection and the tooth was saved.

The first trial was a success and Mr Steggles has since treated thousands of other teeth.

Mr Steggles said that he was expecting to have to remove the patient’s tooth a few days after using the paste, however, instead, he noticed significant improvement and the tooth is still functioning almost five years later. Since he treated his first patient with the miracle paste, Mr Steggles has treated around 3,000 teeth. The primary use of the paste is to treat severe cases of gum disease, but it could also be useful as an alternative means of treating other dental infections.

The invention has impressed representatives from the British Dental Association but they are keen to stress the importance of prevention, rather than cure and are encouraging members of the public to stick to a good oral hygiene routine and attend regular dental appointments to keep dental diseases at bay.

While this miracle paste will be a huge advancement for treating sever cases, the BDA are absolutely correct, prevention is still the best policy.
